Engineering Identity

Jerrod Henderson, Rick Greer, Mariam Manuel

The aim of this project is to contribute to the educational knowledge base of the role of programs like PIE2RS in the development of STEM and researcher identity. This will be accomplished by answering two research questions: RQ1: Using photovoice, how do PIE2RS participants describe their research experience? RQ2: How do PIE2RS participants reflect upon their experiences mentoring K12 students? Photovoice is a participatory action research methodology that offers individuals an opportunity to reflect on their experiences through photography. This process involves more than simply taking a photo and telling a story about the image. Photovoice has three main objectives: (1) Documenting and critically reflecting on strengths and weaknesses in one’s community, (2) engaging in collaborative group discussions, and (3) promoting change by reaching out to leaders and decision-makers within that community.

The research student working on this project will contribute to conducting focus groups and individual interviews and analyzing qualitative focus groups and individual interview transcripts.

Researcher Interest and Skills: Must be interested in qualitative engineering education research, including conducting interviews, focus groups, and analyzing interview transcripts.
